About Uniswap
Uniswap is the automated market maker most of DeFi is measured against, and UNI is its governance token — distributed in September 2020 in the airdrop that set the template for the rest of the industry. UNI holds no claim on trading fees by default; the long-running "fee switch" debate is about whether governance turns that on. Roughly 60% of the billion-token supply is circulating, with the remainder vesting to the treasury and team.
UNI lives mainly on Ethereum, so moving it costs Ethereum gas; the protocol itself is deployed across several layer 2s where swaps are far cheaper.
UNI is a high-beta proxy for DeFi sentiment and has repriced hard on governance votes about the fee switch.
