Using the Tezos Staking Calculator
This calculator estimates what staking XTZ pays over a period you choose, in both coins and dollars. The reward rate is prefilled at 9% β roughly 3β5% delegating, roughly 8β11% staking, and adaptive issuance moves both β but treat that as a starting point, not a quote: staking rates move with participation and with validator commission, so put in the rate your own validator advertises.
How you stake XTZ: Delegate your XTZ to a baker to keep it fully liquid at the lower rate, or stake it to that baker to earn roughly double. Running your own baker is possible but needs a meaningful bond and reliable uptime. Liquidity matters as much as the rate. Delegation has no lock at all. Staked XTZ does: an unstake request becomes spendable after 4 cycles, on the order of eleven days, and staked funds β unlike delegated ones β can be slashed if your baker double-bakes or double-attests. A high advertised rate on a coin you cannot exit quickly is a different product from the same rate on a liquid position, and that difference shows up exactly when you need it β during a sharp drawdown.
Two things the dollar figure cannot tell you. First, rewards are usually taxable as income when you receive them in most jurisdictions, at the value on the day β see the tax guide for your country. Second, XTZ is a small-cap relative to the majors, so it moves further than BTC in both directions and can be thin during fast selloffs. A 9% yield does not protect you from a price move several times that size, so judge staking on total return, not on the APR alone.
What 9% actually compounds to on XTZ
- Reward rate
- 9% (roughly 3β5% delegating, roughly 8β11% staking, and adaptive issuance moves both)
- First year on 5,000 XTZ
- 450 XTZ
- Monthly-compounded 1y
- 469.03 XTZ
- Compounded 5y
- 2,828 XTZ
At 9% (roughly 3β5% delegating, roughly 8β11% staking, and adaptive issuance moves both), staking 5,000 XTZ pays about 450 XTZ in the first year simple. Compounded monthly that becomes 469.03 XTZ, and left to compound for five years, 2,828 XTZ β the gap widens the longer your XTZ stays put, which is where the lockup matters: Delegation has no lock at all. Staked XTZ does: an unstake request becomes spendable after 4 cycles, on the order of eleven days, and staked funds β unlike delegated ones β can be slashed if your baker double-bakes or double-attests.
Staking is native to Tezos, so you are securing the protocol directly rather than trusting a wrapper. Rewards arrive in XTZ, so their dollar value rides the price β a 9% yield is no defence against a price move several times that size, so judge the position on total return rather than the headline rate.
Figures are derived from XTZ's own daily closes over the window shown and are bounded by it β not all-time values. Prices move; treat them as context, not a forecast.

Frequently asked questions
- How much can I earn staking Tezos?
- At roughly 9% a year, staking 5,000 XTZ earns about 450 XTZ over twelve months before commission. Enter your own amount and rate above for the exact figure, in coins and at the live XTZ price.
- Is my XTZ locked while staking?
- Delegation has no lock at all. Staked XTZ does: an unstake request becomes spendable after 4 cycles, on the order of eleven days, and staked funds β unlike delegated ones β can be slashed if your baker double-bakes or double-attests.
- Are XTZ staking rewards taxed?
- In most countries staking rewards are income at the moment you can access them, valued in your local currency on that date, and then a second capital-gains event when you later sell. A few treat them differently β Germany, for instance, has its own allowance for staking income. Check our tax guide for your jurisdiction.
- How are staking rewards calculated?
- Rewards β amount staked Γ annual reward rate Γ (days Γ· 365). This is a simple (non-compounded) estimate.
- APR vs APY for staking?
- APR is the flat annual rate. If you restake (compound) rewards, your effective APY is higher β see the APY calculator.
